These two courses were approved as new courses on the Sep 24, 2013 agenda. There was confusion on whether the courses needed to be approved by the GE Committee before the ICC. Any courses requiring GE status do need to be approved by the GE Committee following the steps in the requesting GE status process.

Business & Communication

Communication Dept. explanation of fee request:

  • In 2009 20 iMac computers were purchased via one-time funding for the JEN 184 Mac Lab.  Since then they have become outdated and worn out.  Several have become unusable.
  • That same year the PC lab in JEN 192 was equipped with reallocated computers and Adobe audio editing software.
  • The computers are used by Digital Motion Picture and Broadcasting students (TV and radio).  These programs have seen significant growth in recent years.  There are currently more students than computers in each class taught in the labs.
  • The price of a new iMac is about $1,500.
  • The new version of the film editing software isn’t compatible with the old iMac computers.
  • The Adobe license for this year was $2,208 for the Macs and $2,415 for the PC’s.
  • Departmental operational funds are far from being sufficient enough to keep up with the needs.
  • Class fees would pay for yearly licenses, and a systematic plan to replace computers, phasing out the old and broken ones.

Education

Explanation of the course fee for the ELED and SCED courses:

There were two changes to the fee charged for entering the ELED or SCED program. Both were approved at Academic Council in December 2013.

First, an increase of the fee from $150 to $200 was approved. The breakdown of costs is as follows:

  • Mentor Teacher Stipend – $125 (comparable to other institutions in the State)
  • Supervision Mileage Reimbursement for all 4 semesters – $60 (current amount was not sufficient to cover cost of supervision mileage reimbursement)
  • Materials for Field Experiences – $15

Second, currently, the students have to pay the total program fee amount when they are accepted into the program – one lump sum. It is difficult for some to find that much money to pay all at once, and the program fees, as such, are not eligible to be paid for by any financial aid that pays tuition and fees. So, the EDUC department proposed that the amount of $200 be divided between four classes (one each semester) and be attached as a class fee. This way, financial aid will be able to cover the cost through a course fee and others will be able to stretch out the payment of the program fee over multiple semesters. (This is similar to the way the nursing program does their program fees.)

Science & Technology

FYI information:  Rationale for fee changes in the department of Physical Science

Chemistry fees collected 12/13 year = $34,900, Expenses for same year = $39,933 Phys/Geo/Engr fees collected 12/13 year = $14,545, Expenses for same year = $27,776 Total fees = $49,445, Total expenses = $67,709

New expenses 13/14 academic year:

Chemistry stockroom supervisor (V. Hasfurther put $35,597 in 12/13 budget to get position started, future funding is from Chem lab fees) Scanning electron microscope ($7000 year maintenance fee) – we were able to go without maintenance fee for 2 years because it was new, it now requires maintenance.

X-ray fluorescence chemical analysis instrument ($4000 year maintenance fee) – we were able to go without maintenance fee for 2 years because it was new, it now requires maintenance.

GC-MS chemical analysis instrument – requires a few thousand dollars in repairs to get working. Required instrument in chemistry program.

NMR – new instrument required to have a American Chemical Society accredited chemistry program. It will cost $120,000 in the future (saving for this).

Part-time Secretary- unfunded position, approx. $20,000 year. (we shared a full-time secretary with Biology when we were in the Science building, the move required a new part-time position)
